Steps for Disaster Relief Response for DBA Churches

October 2008

When Hurricane Ike struck the coast of Texas, the Emergency Response Center notified Camp Copass to prepare for evacuees. Not knowing when or how many were to arrive, the camp, and DBA stepped into action. Churches were notified, volunteers enlisted and a plan of action was established. As it turned out, no evacuees were sent to Camp Copass. We learned some things from this emergency, even though we were not called upon for our services. We realized we needed a contact person from every DBA church to notify during an emergency. Emails were sent out to pastors. Many pastors forwarded this information to other pertinent individuals who then contacted DBA. However, we know many willing individuals never knew of the need for volunteers because they never received the information.

To alleviate this problem we are asking every DBA church to:

    1. Select an Emergency Contact Person (ECP)

    2. Provide DBA with the name, phone number and email address of ECP

    3. Instruct ECP to begin enlisting emergency volunteers from your church

We hope there isn’t another disaster in the near future, but if there is we want to be ready.
